“In 7 years your mattress will double in weight” – Says Dr. Breus

Just recently (December 4th 2007) one of our team members caught a television show on PBS titled “Good Night with the Sleep Doctor Michael Breus, PhD”.

It was a fascinating show in which Dr. Breus explained the major sleep problems facing American’s today. It is estimated that 36 million American’s have a problem getting through the day simply due to sleep deprivation and insomnia. That is a pretty large percentage of our population. Are you getting enough sleep?

Dr. Breus makes some great points in his presentation and he even talks about the importance of good quality sheets! This is something that we are pretty familiar with : ) As many of you know, there is nothing like a set of great fitting, cozy bed sheets to help you fall asleep faster: Hard To Find Bed Sheets

Sometimes you are unaware of how something so simple like bed sheets can make such a huge difference in your sleep quality until you actually compare a great luxury sheet and a cheaper plain sheet set. There is a difference.

It really is true – The more comfortable you are, the more likely you are to fall asleep quicker and stay snoozing throughout the night. Great sheets of course are just one factor in many that can be combined to help you get a better nights rest.

The Dr. also points out that in 7 years, your mattress will double in weight due to sweat, dust mites and oil from your skin: The Bottom Line. That is incredible but very believable. After all, human perspiration itself averages 2 pints per day and it is estimated that 2 million dust mites thrive in an unprotected mattress.

It is the inhalation of dead dust mites and their droppings that can cause allergies, asthma and rhinitis which can make it difficult to fall asleep. We do offer a product (dust mite protection) which can help with this problem whether you have a new or older mattress.

(Be sure to check out the Doctors website for some tips on buying a new mattress)

All in all, it was a great show. If you missed it, you may be able to catch another airing in the future by checking your local PBS listings or clicking over to Dr. Breus’ official website shown below.

Sincerely,

Mattress Protection Is Important

Did you know that most if not every mattress manufacture has certain terms and conditions that have to be followed or met in order for your mattress to be covered under warranty?

The most common terms and conditions:

No rips or tears – This will usually void your mattress warranty instantly. Of course a mattress can wear to the point of tearing BUT there is usually a clear cut difference between that and a slice, puncture or forced rip mark.

Advice: Never use scissors, a knife or any sharp object to cut open the protective plastic on your brand new mattress. Instead find the seam and pull it apart by hand. You will be surprised at how easy it will come off.

Also, always use help when moving or carrying your mattress – especially a pillowtop. Many consumers will grab the pillow portion of their mattress and try to man handle the mattress on their own. This is not a good idea. Instead you can ask a family member or a friend to help out and handle the other side while you rearrange or move your mattress. Doing this may just save your warranty and the last thing you need is a rip or tear in a brand new mattress set.

No stains – This can be a tricky one. There are the obvious ways that stains can be placed on a mattress such as incontinence and spillage of liquids like water, tea and soft drinks. (yes water will stain a mattress).

But the least known stain generator is human perspiration! The body can expel up to 2 pints of perspiration per day. This can lead to fairly large markings and stains on your mattress.

Did you ever get rid of an old mattress or help someone move a used mattress? Did you notice the stains on that mattress? The stains could be from anything but more than likely if the owner never had an accident on the mattress, the stains were caused by human sweat.

Perspiration is a naturally occurring process in the human body and mattress staining can be a down side to it…………… unless you have good mattress protection.

Advice: Get yourself a good mattress protector and use it from day one. A good protector will be waterproof, breathable & dust mite resistant. There are many on the market today but we here at Hard To Find Sheets carry the “Protect A Bed” brand exclusively.

We can point out ALL the details and features of the product here on our blog but we would much rather show you a video of all the benefits instead:

Mattress Protection Page

The bottom line in mattress protection is this – make sure you get it! Whether it be from our website or from your local bedding store, spend the the extra money now to save hundreds or even thousands of dollars at a later date.

Till next time, write in with your questions or comments. We love to hear from you.

Split Size Bed Sheets -vs- Split Head Bed Sheets?

Did you know that even though both of these sheet sizes are hard to find and although they sound very much alike, they are far from being the same size of sheet?

The “Split Size” bed sheet refers to a sizing that will accommodate a bed that is split completely down the middle. Essentially, this bed is made up of two separate units. For example, a split king size bed will consist of two units measuring approximately 38″ x 80″ each. You will need split king size sheets for this type of sleep system.

The “Split Head Size” bed sheet refers to a sizing that will accommodate a sleep system that is also split down the middle BUT does not completely separate. In other words, this type of sleep system is adjustable and split but only at the top portion of the bed. This size of sheet is also commonly referred to as a “Split Top” sheet. Both descriptions are used for this size of bedding.

Many higher end mattress manufacturers produce both the split size and the split top/head size sleep systems. Some of the better know brands are Tempurpedic, Comfortaire, Dormia & Natura.

Materials used for these luxury sleep systems can be anything from regular coiled mattresses to latex, memory foam & even organic wool fill. Whatever the make up of the bed, your sheets are an important part of your sleep system.
